Sandi’s back: Holiday sand tree rises on waterfront

Team Sandtastic tamps down the sand before carving sand tree

The boys are back at it with their pails and shovels. They’re rebuilding Sandi, the holiday tree that will grace the waterfront.

No Douglas fir for West Palm Beach. Sandi, which will rise 35 feet above the city’s Great Lawn, is being constructed of 600 tons of tamped down and intricately carved sand. A group called Team Sandtastic is creating the annual feature now through Nov. 23.

Rain tamped down the fun last year, sending the team back to rework the design as best they could. This year they’ve dried out the sand more in advance, so that Sandi’s water content will be lower to begin with and more likely to withstand a downpour.
