On Tuesday, April 25, Planned Parenthood health centers are offering free STD/HIV testing in Palm Beach County, Miami and the Treasure Coast. As part of a national campaign, ‘Get Yourself Tested’ month is an effort to normalize STD testing and urge people to have open, honest communication around sexually transmitted infections and ways to stay safe.
The West Palm Beach location for testing is the West Palm Beach Health Center, which will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center is at 931 Village Blvd., Suite 904 (in the Publix shopping center).
This is also a good time to talk to teens about STD prevention. In Palm Beach County, teens 17 and under can always get an STD/HIV test free of charge at Planned Parenthood health centers. Planned Parenthood also offers educational programs for parents where they can learn best practices for talking to kids about sexuality and safe sex.
Florida leads the nation in new HIV infections. In fact, out of all Florida counties, Miami-Dade and Broward continue to stand at number 1 and 2 respectively in the U.S. in new HIV infections, according to state and federal data.
Palm Beach County saw a nearly a 30 percent spike in these STDs (gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis) from 2009 to 2014, increasing from 4,972 cases to 6,419.
